Trihalomethanes formation potential of polluted tropical river water and its correlation with UV-Vis spectral ratio: A case study in Citarum River, Indonesia

Abstract The presence of natural organic matter (NOM) and anthropogenic (AOM) in polluted river water leads to the formation carcinogenic disinfection by-products (DBPs) during chlorination process. This study aimed determine trihalomethanes (THMs) formation, as regulated DBPs, tropical water. samples were taken from Citarum River, Bandung, Indonesia. NOM AOM characterized using UV 254 , 355 ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectral ratio while DBPs was determined THM4 potential. In several sampling points, potential exceeded USEPA regulation standards had high toxicity (LC 50 ) values. On other hand, points small formations.
